You know what’s funny?
We walk away from the school system thinking we’re choosing freedom… and then find ourselves still measuring everything by the system’s ruler.
Is my child reading early enough?
Are we doing “enough” math?
Should I be worried about gaps?
But here’s the thing nobody tells you:
When you step off the conveyor belt, there’s no such thing as "behind" anymore.
Behind who? Behind what?
A system built for mass production, not human souls?
You’re not falling behind.
You’re building something that’s never been built before: an education crafted for your real, breathing, alive, unique child.
Of course it doesn’t look like the standardized model. It’s not supposed to.
You didn’t leave the factory line just to set up a mini one at home.
You left because you knew — maybe in your bones even if you couldn't explain it yet — that something wilder, freer, and truer was possible.
I’ll be honest: There are still days when I feel the pull of the old timeline.
When I scroll past someone’s “school at home” dining room table approach to learning and feel that little flicker of panic: Am I doing enough? Should I be planning more? Should I be replicating this?
That’s when I breathe and remember:
I didn’t build this life for my children to perform. Not for me, not for anyone else. I built it for them to live.
And so did you.
The slow mornings.
The messy projects.
The deep rabbit holes of curiosity.
The days when learning looks like nothing you ever could explain on a school transcript.
That’s the work.
That’s the revolution you’re/we’re leading—quietly, daily, courageously.
Because true education was never supposed to be about speed, efficiency, or comparison. It was supposed to be about becoming.
And becoming takes time.
Becoming takes wandering. Becoming takes a kind of trust that the system spent generations trying to burn out of you.
So if you’ve been feeling behind, let me remind you:
You’re not behind.
You’re ahead of the old story.
You’re building a future no one can measure yet.
You’re raising children who know how to trust themselves more than a rubric.
And that is revolutionary work.
